Visiting Aging Family Members During The Holiday Season

Visiting Aging Family Members During The Holiday Season

Are you planning to visit aging family members this holiday season? Do you know that hospital visits for aging and elderly patients tend to rise immediately following the holidays? It is common for aging parents to be able to convince their adult children of their well-being from a distance, via phone calls or even emails. However, often times, as the family gathers to celebrate in person, loved ones can physically see aging family members and become acutely aware of the limitations that have developed since the last visit. The stairs down to the laundry are now a major fall risk. The hallway back to the bathroom is now too narrow for an appropriate ambulatory device. The shower is too difficult to get into with no grab bars and can become a setup for a broken hip. So, the family comes in from out-of-town and they spend their time together discussing how to get Mom or Dad the help that they need. In many cases, they will take the loved on to the ER because they just don’t know where to start.

THERE ARE OPTIONS OUT THERE!!

As you visit your aging family members this season, be encouraged. There is a large network of people, agencies, resources and companies who genuinely care for the seniors in our community and they are ready to step in and provide assistance. The Life and Love Program through Morrison Monuments is established to assist families with this very thing. Beth is a licensed social worker with years of hospital discharge planning experience. If you have questions regarding how to keep a loved one safe in their own home, need to discuss assisted living or nursing home placements, feel free to give us a call or send Beth an email. We would love to help support more seniors in our community, especially during this special time of year!
